Prednisolone Side Effects.

Possible side effects of prednisone

  • Increased appetite and weight gain – a side effect that is most commonly disturbing patients treated with prednisone and other corticosteroids. The amount of weight gained is individual for each person. In addition, prednisone can lead to a redistribution of the body fat with the formation of “fat pads” in undesirable areas,  e.g., the face (at the chin), at the base of the neck (“buffalo hump “), above the clavicles and at the abdomen. Fat deposition mainly in the upper part of the body is another feature of prednisone-related  weight gain .
  • Prednisone possesses an immunosuppressive effect, so the body becomes more susceptible to infections. People, treated with prednisone or other steroids are more to fungal infections, herpes exacerbation and more severe diseases (e.g., pneumonia). The risk of some infectious diseases may be reduced by preventive antibiotic treatment. Only the doctor can choose and prescribe a proper antibiotic. For that reason, if you are waiting for an operation or you are being treated for an infectious disease, do not forget to tell your doctor that you are taking or have recently finished taking prednisone;
  • Sleep disorders and hyperactivity (when  people find it hard to remain calm and stationary) – this effect can be observed only during the first time after starting prednisone therapy;
  • Increased irritability, unstable mood, psychosis (hallucinations, space disorientation) –these manifestations are usually short-lived;
  • Fluid retention in the body with a decrease in the amount of urine  and face puffing;
  • Acne – often appears on the face after several weeks of high-dose prednisone treatment.
  •  Disturbances in glucose tolerance – usually a short-term side effect. Blood sugar rises, but this is usually a reversible process. After lowering the dose of prednisone or after cessation of prednisone treatment, normal blood glucose level is restored.
  • Increased blood pressure – this is also a reversible process. After discontinuation of prednisone or dose reduction, blood pressure drops to normal.
  •  Discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract – nausea, constipation, discomfort after meals, reduction in appetite.

Possible side effects from prolonged use of high doses of prednisone

  • Increased growth of facial hair; women may suffer from hirsutism – an excessive hair growth in those parts of the body where terminal hair does not normally occur or is minimal;
  • Bone fractures. Long-term prednisone treatment may cause bone fragility even among those people who are not usually prone to osteoporosis (men, young patients). Prednisone may accelerate loss of bone tissue in people who are prone to osteoporosis (women after 45-50 years). However, the ways of preventing osteoporosis have significantly increased in recent years. All patients taking prednisone for a long period, if necessary, receive medicines to prevent increased bone fragility.
  • Increased risk of blood clots in the vessels;
  • Appearance of stretch marks – purple stripes on the sides of the torso and abdomen, often appear after long period of large doses of prednisone.
  • Ease of skin damage – prednisone may lead to the “thin skin” phenomenon, when a large bruise occurs after a slight trauma (for example when a person slightly strikes his leg against a chair and breaks his skin with a large bruise.
  • Glaucoma – increased intraocular pressure with further damage of the optic nerve.
  • Cataract – lenticular opacity, that require surgical removal of the lens and its substitution with artificial lens in case of decreased vision

Prawns Aglio Olio yummayh!

my homemade Prawn Aglio Olio…:D

mom suddenly asked for this, so we googled the recipe..

she said it looked so delicious when she saw someone made em in the masterchef competition..

so in order to satisfy her wishes, me and my younger brother set out for the ingredients, and by using one of the recipes we found on the net, Ta-daa!

p/s: in the evening, i made some more of this because my family just loves em :’)

heres the recipe, superbly easy to make, and so yummayh 🙂

(Serves 2)

– 2 servings of pasta (about 160-180g spaghetti)
– 3 tbsp good quality olive oil
– 40g butter, divided
– 10 to 12 large prawns (US name: shrimps)
– 10 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced or chopped (not too finely)
– 2 chilli padi, sliced or 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
– 30g Italian flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
– sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper

1. Bring a pot of water with 1 tbsp sea salt to a boil.  Cook pasta according to the timing indicated on the packet, until al dente. Drain and set aside the pasta, reserving some of the pasta water.
2. Remove the shells and veins from the prawns. Add the prawns heads and shells to a small pot with just enough water to cover them (I use about 150ml water), bring to a simmer for about 3-5 minutes to make prawn stock. Strain the stock and set aside.
3. Heat half the butter in a sauce pan. Cook the prawns on both sides and set aside.
4. Add olive oil to the sauce pan with the prawn juices and browned bits. When the oil is heated, add garlic and chilli padi/chilli flakes (if using). Saute till the garlic turns light brown.
5. Turn off the stove. The garlic will continue cooking in the hot oil on its own for a few more seconds in the hot oil, until they turn a lovely golden brown.
6. Add cooked pasta, cooked prawns, about 2 tbsp of prawn stock, chopped parsley and remaining butter (cubed) to the garlic & oil mixture. Stir to coat all the ingredients evenly. Season with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper.

Nephrotic Syndrome

periorbital edema

i’m obviously inconsistent with updating my blog..T_T..

well not that i have any constant readers pon luls..

anyways just a little update on life..

i was recently diagnosed to have nephrotic syndrome around one month back,

right after returning from raya aidilfitri in malaysia..

i started having periorbital edema, then i started having bilateral leg edema.

in a ‘laymen’s term, its swelling around the eyes and swelling of legs..

i was obviously scared but at that time somehow i was calm.

i believe that everything happens for a reason, and Allah is with me..

i went through a lot of lab investigations,

that sometimes i had to skip classes in order to withdraw blood and collect the reports..

i had proteinuria which was four + (++++)

and thats a lot..

after that more test was done, and it was confirmed to be nephrotic syndrome.

–> proteinuria + hypoalbuminemia + hyperlipidemia + edema

the dr rule out autoimmunne dss, and SLE..

up till now i still havent figured out the cause of this syndrome..

in the hospital, i was 58kg++ due to the swelling (water retention)

i went for ultrasound guided renal biopsy to determine the kind of damage thats happening to my kidneys.

i had to stay in the hospital for one night, and full bedrest. it was really boring, but i was a little bit sedated so i slept most of the times.

the result came out few days after, and the dr confirmed it to be minimal change kidney disease, which has the best prognosis of all..Alhamdulillah for that..

i had my breakdown after the stay in the hospital.

i become worst, i was swelling all over my body…

i woke up in the middle of the night with gastritis and abdominal pain..

my legs felt really tight, and i was always tired..and sleeping..

i called up Mom, and i tried hard not to cry, but eventually i did,

soon after hearing her voice..

i wanted to avoid such breakdowns because i didnt want my family to be so worried,

they were really worried.

they even talked about coming over, but i was already going back in around 2weeks after my exams.

so i convinced them not to come all the way to India..

that friday, just 3 days before my finals. i started studying..

i kept calm eventhough there’s so so so much to read,,,keeping calm is the best choice..because if i start to panic, i wont be studying much!

i manage to study and went through my finals, and that very next friday, i went home ❤

since ive started on steroids, diuretics, and other medicines, im starting to get better..

im glad my family doesnt have to see me so swelled up, with a face like japanese asean puff up…

i came back being very tiny due to muscle wasting…

i did looked like budak darjah 6…hehe

now after starting the steroids, my appetite have grown by 10 fold..

the first day i came back i ate 10 plates of rice all day long…

my parents is getting a bit worried with the amount i could eat…

but now im really trying to control the amount of food im taking, and im also exercising regurlarly..

like jogging in the morning and evening, and doing some abdominal exercises…

my doctor did remind me so many times that taking steroids can make me fat..

belly fat, and also organ fat! that’s what really worries me, i dnt want my heart, liver and other organs gets to much and dad kept on reminding me i have to be discipline and determined in taking care of my body…i do not wanna get fat! hewhewhew

in a nutshell (cey lame x gune)

im relieved that i went through this episode in life..

it made me realized that Allah has his plannings, and whatever happens insyAllah there’s hikmah..

this made me stronger inside, and i thanked Allah…

for my family, and friends who have been there for me, gave me support, motivation, strength, May Allah bless all of you..jazakallah khair ❤

getting better alhamdulillah 😀

Alhamdulillah dipertemukan lagi dgn Ramadhan kali ini.

Truth be told, I was not prepared.

This year, Ramadhan in India started the same day as Malaysia. We only knew this right after Isyak prayers. I really want this Ramadhan to be different from my previous ones.

I want to purify and renew my heart, and my Imann.

Let this be my new beginning, Ya Allah.

It’s been awhile.

It’s been awhile since i last played bowling. It was fun back then, even though i’m not that good.

I miss all those moments, just having fun, letting loose.

Trying hard to strike, but end up masuk longkang!

yeah, moments, memories.

All the good times. I wish i could relive them once again.
